To our families and community and our young people

Over the past few weeks our families have been devastated by the loss of young people and family members, to ill health, suicide, car accidents, and this week, the death in custody of a young man.

We are heartbroken. We stand together to support each other. We know that around the country all Aboriginal families are dealing with loss.

We are worried about how the police and other services treat our people.

We want the Government to know that we stand as one with Yuendumu and we stand by the families who are suffering great pain and who are asking for answers about the loss of their grandson and son.

We are so sorry for the loss of his sacred life and our thoughts and love are with his family.

How can a young man die like this?

We are worried for our young people. We are worried about their safety. There is too much pain that they are carrying.

To our young people, we want you to know how much we love you.

All of our children are sacred, from the little ones to the young adults.

As we grieve we will continue to fight for change, for justice, for safety.

We will continue to stand together as Aboriginal people.

We must protect our children and fight for their future and listen to their voices.

We listen to the voices of our Elders and the spirit of the land as we grieve, heal and move forward.

We send this message of love, strength and healing to our families and to all First Nations people.

From the Arrernte families at Ampe-kenhe Ahelhe and all staff and families of Children’s Ground.
