What Does Agency Mean?

William Tilmouth, Gwenda Stanley and Larissa Baldwin-Roberts in conversation with Madeline Hayman-Reber in the lead up to invasion day

In the lead up to Invasion Day 2023, this conversation brought together three panelists with extensive lived experience of the oppressive structures that work against the agency of First Nations communities.

Hosted by Gomeroi woman and Indigenous affairs journalist Madeline Hayman-Reber, the panelists included:

  • William Tilmouth, Arrernte Elder and Children’s Ground Chairperson.
  • Gwenda Stanley, a Gomeroi woman, incursion artist, dancer, and Aboriginal rights activist.
  • Larissa Baldwin-Roberts, a Widjabul Wia-bul woman and CEO of GetUp.

In this panel, they discuss the importance of self-determination and agency in First Nations communities across the country, historically, presently, and into the future. We hope that you walk away with a deeper understanding of the power of agency and the role you can play in supporting First Nations self-determination in this country.
