Throughout NAIDOC Week, we are sharing voices from Country. These are stories of leadership, culture and connection that continue across generations.
This NAIDOC Week, we hear from Jacqui Goodman and her granddaughter Aida, two generations from 15 Mile Community in the Top End. Their reflections on culture, responsibility and the future show the strength of family and the value of knowledge shared across generations.
Jacquie Goodman is a Community Lead for 15 Mile Community and a Learning, Health and Wellbeing Support Worker in Early Years. Aida is a Community Activities and Support Worker for the Extended Hours Program. Together, they reflect on what it means to hold cultural responsibility and guide young people through story, language and care.
Their words speak to the heart of this year’s theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy. They share what they were taught by their Elders, what keeps them strong today, and what they want their children and grandchildren to carry forward.
I hope the next generation carry on the culture and stories that I’m giving them. I want to see them teaching culture and speaking the language. Jacqui Goodman - 15 Mile Community Leader
I hope the next generation carry on the culture and stories that I’m giving them. I want to see them teaching culture and speaking the language.
As we celebrate 50 years of NAIDOC, we honour the knowledge that lives within community. These stories remind us that the strength of the next generation comes from those who walk beside them.
